[00:01:25] [SPEAKER_01]: stock market continues to drop. CNBC reporting. U.S. stocks fell sharply as part of a global market sell-off centered around U.S. recession fears.
[00:01:41] [SPEAKER_01]: Well, what's a recession? I don't even know. I mean, I used to know what a recession was. I remember we all used to know what a recession... I mean, this was... Granted, I am dating myself here. This was a long, long time ago.
[00:01:54] [SPEAKER_01]: And everybody believed in the same definition of a recession, which was back-to-back quarters of, as they say in GovCo land, negative growth.
[00:02:06] [SPEAKER_01]: Which is not growth, by the way. Negative growth is shrinkage.
[00:02:11] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm not sure if the economy is in the pool or not, but either way, negative growth. Back-to-back quarters, negative growth. That is a recession.
[00:02:21] [SPEAKER_01]: But, but they had to rewrite that definition because there were back-to-back quarters of negative growth or shrinkage.
[00:02:32] [SPEAKER_01]: And that did not look good for the Democrats that were in power. And so they had to rewrite the definition.
[00:02:41] [SPEAKER_01]: And so now I'm not sure what these people are even afraid of on Wall Street because that's not what a recession means anymore.
[00:02:49] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm not really sure what it means. I'm not really sure what back-to-back quarters of negative growth or shrinkage would be.
[00:02:56] [SPEAKER_01]: The, I guess we got to come up with another name for it.
[00:03:00] [SPEAKER_01]: The Japanese Nikkei 225 plunged 12% in its worst day since the 1987 Black Monday crash for Wall Street.
[00:03:12] [SPEAKER_01]: The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 821 points or about 2%.
[00:03:19] [SPEAKER_01]: The NASDAQ down 2.7%. S&P down 2.3%.
[00:03:23] [SPEAKER_01]: The blue chip Dow earlier fell as much as 1,200 points.
[00:03:29] [SPEAKER_01]: Fears of a U.S. recession were the main culprit for the global meltdown after Friday's disappointing July jobs report.
[00:03:39] [SPEAKER_01]: But wait a minute. I thought, I thought Joe Biden had clearly said,
[00:03:46] [SPEAKER_01]: and everybody was like, oh, thank God, you know, the jobs are awesome and the economy.
[00:03:51] [SPEAKER_01]: Remember, he healed, he fixed the economy. He healed us.
[00:03:54] [SPEAKER_01]: He healed the economy. This is what made his retirement, his decision not to run for another term.
[00:04:04] [SPEAKER_01]: That's what made it so darn patriotic and public service-y, you know,
[00:04:09] [SPEAKER_01]: was that despite all of the successes,
[00:04:13] [SPEAKER_01]: all of his victories,
[00:04:16] [SPEAKER_01]: how awesome he had made us,
[00:04:19] [SPEAKER_01]: he was stepping aside to pass the torch for no reason,
[00:04:21] [SPEAKER_01]: just, you know,
[00:04:23] [SPEAKER_01]: I guess he had done everything he needed to do,
[00:04:24] [SPEAKER_01]: even though a week prior he said he hadn't done everything that he wanted to do.
[00:04:28] [SPEAKER_01]: But anyway, he said he wasn't done,
[00:04:29] [SPEAKER_01]: but then he was done,
[00:04:30] [SPEAKER_01]: and then Kamala Harris was picked.
[00:04:32] [SPEAKER_01]: Remember those days?
[00:04:33] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, it feels like an eternity ago.
[00:04:36] [SPEAKER_01]: But I don't know about you,
[00:04:38] [SPEAKER_01]: but today, really looking forward to another four years of this.
[00:04:42] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, this is just fantastic, right?
[00:04:45] [SPEAKER_01]: We got the stock market cratering,
[00:04:52] [SPEAKER_01]: what appears to be a brand new Middle East war,
[00:04:55] [SPEAKER_01]: which, look, to be fair,
[00:04:57] [SPEAKER_01]: that war has been going on for a while.
[00:05:00] [SPEAKER_01]: Nobody just wants to really acknowledge that it has been going on,
[00:05:03] [SPEAKER_01]: but this is where all of this was going since October 7th.
[00:05:08] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, this, obviously so.
[00:05:12] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm not sure if we're going to send Iran a whole bunch of more money in the interim,
[00:05:17] [SPEAKER_01]: maybe airlift a couple more pallets of cash,
[00:05:20] [SPEAKER_01]: so they're better able to, you know,
[00:05:23] [SPEAKER_01]: build up the stockpile of ordnance and munitions in order to attack the Jews.
[00:05:28] [SPEAKER_01]: So, yes, I'm not sure if they've booked any of that,
[00:05:31] [SPEAKER_01]: but good luck booking any kind of air travel,
[00:05:35] [SPEAKER_01]: because that's melting down, too.
[00:05:37] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, that's kind of due to the hurricane,
[00:05:39] [SPEAKER_01]: but also, I mean, it's just a general trend.
[00:05:43] [SPEAKER_01]: You know, we went,
[00:05:46] [SPEAKER_01]: we took a trip over the last week,
[00:05:48] [SPEAKER_01]: Christy and I,
[00:05:49] [SPEAKER_01]: we drove up to New York,
[00:05:51] [SPEAKER_01]: and last year was the first year that we decided we're not flying anymore.
[00:05:57] [SPEAKER_01]: We actually made the decision two years prior
[00:05:59] [SPEAKER_01]: when we walked in,
[00:06:02] [SPEAKER_01]: well, first, we,
[00:06:03] [SPEAKER_01]: well, I take that back.
[00:06:04] [SPEAKER_01]: It's been three years ago,
[00:06:06] [SPEAKER_01]: because the first time we had our flight booked on what we thought was JetBlue,
[00:06:11] [SPEAKER_01]: because we like JetBlue.
[00:06:13] [SPEAKER_01]: JetBlue was running daily routes,
[00:06:15] [SPEAKER_01]: multiple routes every day,
[00:06:17] [SPEAKER_01]: direct to JFK,
[00:06:18] [SPEAKER_01]: and it was fantastic.
[00:06:19] [SPEAKER_01]: It was like, you know,
[00:06:20] [SPEAKER_01]: 250 bucks round trip.
[00:06:22] [SPEAKER_01]: You got the seats,
[00:06:24] [SPEAKER_01]: they were like leather,
[00:06:25] [SPEAKER_01]: and you had a little TV in the seat in front of you,
[00:06:27] [SPEAKER_01]: so you can watch TV.
[00:06:28] [SPEAKER_01]: They had headphone jacks
[00:06:29] [SPEAKER_01]: that you did not have to buy their stupid special headset for,
[00:06:33] [SPEAKER_01]: and so we liked JetBlue.
[00:06:35] [SPEAKER_01]: It was affordable,
[00:06:36] [SPEAKER_01]: and it was convenient.
[00:06:37] [SPEAKER_01]: It was direct.
[00:06:38] [SPEAKER_01]: We didn't have to lose our luggage someplace
[00:06:39] [SPEAKER_01]: in like Philadelphia or Boston,
[00:06:43] [SPEAKER_01]: so we did JetBlue,
[00:06:44] [SPEAKER_01]: and then we booked with JetBlue,
[00:06:46] [SPEAKER_01]: as we had done prior to COVID,
[00:06:47] [SPEAKER_01]: and then they called us.
[00:06:49] [SPEAKER_01]: We had a flight leaving at like,
[00:06:51] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know,
[00:06:51] [SPEAKER_01]: 5 a.m. or something,
[00:06:52] [SPEAKER_01]: because we didn't want to get caught up
[00:06:54] [SPEAKER_01]: in any kind of East Coast thunderstorm action,
[00:06:56] [SPEAKER_01]: because that just messes up everything in the world
[00:07:00] [SPEAKER_01]: if there's a thunderstorm in the summertime
[00:07:03] [SPEAKER_01]: anywhere like from Chicago East, right?
[00:07:06] [SPEAKER_01]: So we were like,
[00:07:06] [SPEAKER_01]: okay, let's just do the first flight,
[00:07:08] [SPEAKER_01]: so this way any disruption that occurs,
[00:07:11] [SPEAKER_01]: it'll just affect everybody after us, right?
[00:07:13] [SPEAKER_01]: So we booked the very first flight out in the morning,
[00:07:16] [SPEAKER_01]: and this was like three years ago,
[00:07:18] [SPEAKER_01]: the last time we flew,
[00:07:19] [SPEAKER_01]: and no, sorry,
[00:07:20] [SPEAKER_01]: second to last time we flew,
[00:07:21] [SPEAKER_01]: and they canceled our flight the night before
[00:07:24] [SPEAKER_01]: at like 11.30 at night.
[00:07:27] [SPEAKER_01]: They sent an email.
[00:07:29] [SPEAKER_01]: They were like,
[00:07:29] [SPEAKER_01]: oh, hey, by the way,
[00:07:30] [SPEAKER_01]: you want to go and book another flight,
[00:07:32] [SPEAKER_01]: because we just canceled your first flight out
[00:07:33] [SPEAKER_01]: in the morning.
[00:07:35] [SPEAKER_01]: So that's obviously a staffing issue, right?
[00:07:38] [SPEAKER_01]: That's not weather-related.
[00:07:39] [SPEAKER_01]: That's a staffing issue.
[00:07:40] [SPEAKER_01]: That's your first flight.
[00:07:41] [SPEAKER_01]: So I was like, dang it.
[00:07:43] [SPEAKER_01]: But I noticed also like,
[00:07:44] [SPEAKER_01]: wait a minute,
[00:07:45] [SPEAKER_01]: this is coming from American.
[00:07:47] [SPEAKER_01]: Why is this coming from American?
[00:07:49] [SPEAKER_01]: And that's when I found out
[00:07:51] [SPEAKER_01]: that American and JetBlue
[00:07:53] [SPEAKER_01]: had entered into some sort of unholy alliance
[00:07:56] [SPEAKER_01]: where they're all now American flights.
[00:07:59] [SPEAKER_01]: I was not happy.
[00:08:01] [SPEAKER_01]: So we had to book another flight,
[00:08:03] [SPEAKER_01]: which was delayed.
[00:08:05] [SPEAKER_01]: Yes, of course it was.
[00:08:05] [SPEAKER_01]: And then the next year,
[00:08:07] [SPEAKER_01]: now we know there are no more JetBlue flights like that.
[00:08:10] [SPEAKER_01]: It's some sort of agreement that they're operating
[00:08:13] [SPEAKER_01]: where it's basically like,
[00:08:14] [SPEAKER_01]: well, we're just farming this back out to American.
[00:08:19] [SPEAKER_01]: The price of the tickets is way more expensive.
[00:08:22] [SPEAKER_01]: And the flight,
[00:08:25] [SPEAKER_01]: then we walk in,
[00:08:25] [SPEAKER_01]: and again, early morning flight,
[00:08:27] [SPEAKER_01]: this is coming back from JFK.
[00:08:31] [SPEAKER_01]: And we walk in,
[00:08:32] [SPEAKER_01]: we're like,
[00:08:32] [SPEAKER_01]: oh, look, okay,
[00:08:33] [SPEAKER_01]: we're on time.
[00:08:34] [SPEAKER_01]: Fantastic.
[00:08:34] [SPEAKER_01]: We check our luggage.
[00:08:35] [SPEAKER_01]: We look up at the board again.
[00:08:36] [SPEAKER_01]: Now it's delayed,
[00:08:37] [SPEAKER_01]: but we can't get our luggage back.
[00:08:39] [SPEAKER_01]: And then they proceed to rack up the delays
[00:08:42] [SPEAKER_01]: every hour or two,
[00:08:43] [SPEAKER_01]: and they just keep extending the delay
[00:08:46] [SPEAKER_01]: over and over and over again.
[00:08:47] [SPEAKER_01]: So you can't ever leave
[00:08:49] [SPEAKER_01]: because it's not canceled.
[00:08:50] [SPEAKER_01]: And from what I understand,
[00:08:52] [SPEAKER_01]: if they cancel it,
[00:08:52] [SPEAKER_01]: then they got to put you up in a hotel.
[00:08:54] [SPEAKER_01]: They got to make certain accommodations
[00:08:55] [SPEAKER_01]: so they don't cancel them.
[00:08:56] [SPEAKER_01]: They just keep delaying you.
[00:08:58] [SPEAKER_01]: And at that point,
[00:08:59] [SPEAKER_01]: we were like,
[00:08:59] [SPEAKER_01]: you know what?
[00:09:00] [SPEAKER_01]: Bleep this.
[00:09:01] [SPEAKER_01]: We're out.
[00:09:02] [SPEAKER_01]: So now we're driving it.
[00:09:03] [SPEAKER_01]: And from what I,
[00:09:04] [SPEAKER_01]: like we saw the crowd strike meltdown,
[00:09:07] [SPEAKER_01]: man, I was like,
[00:09:08] [SPEAKER_01]: thank goodness we didn't book any flights
[00:09:10] [SPEAKER_01]: before that happened
[00:09:11] [SPEAKER_01]: because that would have affected us on the way up.
[00:09:13] [SPEAKER_01]: Now we got the hurricane on the way back.
[00:09:15] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm seeing hundreds,
[00:09:16] [SPEAKER_01]: if not thousands of people,
[00:09:18] [SPEAKER_01]: hundreds of flights,
[00:09:19] [SPEAKER_01]: delayed,
[00:09:20] [SPEAKER_01]: canceled at Charlotte Douglas.
[00:09:21] [SPEAKER_01]: I saw stories out of Atlanta
[00:09:23] [SPEAKER_01]: where people were like in the airport
[00:09:25] [SPEAKER_01]: for four days.
[00:09:27] [SPEAKER_01]: Couldn't get out of the airport.
[00:09:29] [SPEAKER_01]: Four days.
[00:09:30] [SPEAKER_01]: You're like,
[00:09:30] [SPEAKER_01]: well, why don't they just book a car rental?
[00:09:32] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, there are no more cars.
[00:09:34] [SPEAKER_01]: They got all,
[00:09:35] [SPEAKER_01]: they all got rented.
[00:09:39] [SPEAKER_01]: I think it's getting worse.
[00:09:41] [SPEAKER_01]: I think it just feels like
[00:09:42] [SPEAKER_01]: everything is getting worse.

[00:11:26] [SPEAKER_01]: of thinking on things
[00:11:27] [SPEAKER_01]: is that it becomes very easy.

[00:11:30] [SPEAKER_01]: and the more you do it,
[00:11:31] [SPEAKER_01]: the more you will default
[00:11:32] [SPEAKER_01]: to that way of thinking.

[00:11:35] [SPEAKER_01]: I've noticed
[00:11:35] [SPEAKER_01]: that the people
[00:11:36] [SPEAKER_01]: who have the pessimistic
[00:11:38] [SPEAKER_01]: way of thinking
[00:11:39] [SPEAKER_01]: about things,
[00:11:40] [SPEAKER_01]: they end up,
[00:11:44] [SPEAKER_01]: well,
[00:11:45] [SPEAKER_01]: they end up
[00:11:46] [SPEAKER_01]: never recognizing
[00:11:47] [SPEAKER_01]: the good stuff
[00:11:48] [SPEAKER_01]: when it does happen.
[00:11:49] [SPEAKER_01]: When they're wrong
[00:11:50] [SPEAKER_01]: about something,
