[00:00:29] Very difficult day in Charlotte yesterday it started about 24 hours ago. US Marshals went

[00:00:38] to a house in East Charlotte yesterday about 1.30 in the afternoon so almost 24 hours ago

[00:00:45] and they approached the house where a suspect was believed to be and he was a suspect that

[00:00:57] was wanted on a fugitive warrant for felony possession of firearm. The task force is comprised

[00:01:06] of members of officers from various agencies including Charlotte Mecklenburg police. I believe

[00:01:15] ATF is involved but the US Marshals service and the US or sorry the North Carolina Department

[00:01:23] of Adult Corrections they're involved in it as well and as they according to the

[00:01:31] reports initially the suspect was out in the yard and pulled a gun and started firing on

[00:01:38] police they on the task force they fired back and they killed that person and then they

[00:01:42] believed they were taking fire from the house. That was the initial story what it appears

[00:01:48] to be now is that they went to the house the person was the suspect was not in the yard

[00:01:53] but was apparently up above them. Now I did not hear this question asked I did not hear

[00:02:00] this addressed at the press conference that occurred about two hours ago and I'm still kind

[00:02:05] of going through the audio of it. I listened to it live but I'm trying to pull chunks of audio for

[00:02:10] us during the breaks but I saw a story on WBTV last night or this morning and there was it

[00:02:24] was an interview they did with a homeowner who lives in the home that backs up to the property

[00:02:34] that this occurred at and so there's like backyard to backyard and he talked about how

[00:02:41] you know he heard over like a loudspeaker or something some announcement from the task force

[00:02:52] to I'm thinking the house where the suspect was like you know we're coming in we're here to arrest

[00:02:58] you or whatever and did that precipitate the the and give the guy give the suspect time to get his

[00:03:09] guns get to a window and open fire rather than the quote unquote no knock warrants or whatever

[00:03:17] they call you know where they just kind of roll up to the door and kick it in and the guy

[00:03:21] doesn't know that they're there the suspect doesn't know in other words did they announce their presence

[00:03:27] and I don't know the answer to that but I heard the interview with the the the neighbor

[00:03:33] who then told the cops as they were you know under fire like use my house get into the house

[00:03:37] and so they were in and out of his house using it to stage out of I don't know if they announced

[00:03:45] their presence or not this question came up let me go over to the to a clip here this question was

[00:03:52] asked by I think there was an ABC reporter that was that was at the press conference that's a really

[00:03:58] good question oh hang on this is the first question though uh you see I forgot because I just got a

[00:04:02] big audio file here let's say where was the fire coming from when the when the agents

[00:04:08] approach the house that's a really good question we're still kind of sorting through that right

[00:04:13] now there's we're not ruling out the possibility that someone else was firing as well but we're also

[00:04:18] not ruling out the possibility that as we go through body worn camera footage and as we go

[00:04:23] through interviews to make sure that all of that timeline matches up so once we are able to determine

[00:04:30] that then we'll determine if we do need to look at other individuals or individual who might have

[00:04:36] been shooting I know I mentioned yesterday some pretty forward remarks about a possibility of a

[00:04:43] second shooter we are not ready to say that at this point she can't explain what our officers

[00:04:53] made it to the door before the shooting began where the suspect was at the time and how he

[00:04:59] was able to shoot somebody out right so that's front that's the reporter from ABC news asking

[00:05:05] can you explain how the officers you know where do they make it to the front door how he was able

[00:05:12] to shoot them before they got to the front door here's his answer well yeah first of all the

[00:05:16] officers work actually approaching the residents when they took on gunfire the um suspect at

[00:05:23] the time had an upper advantage to the officer so he was shooting from upstairs down at the

[00:05:30] officers both front and back which also could be an indication that we thought maybe there were

[00:05:36] multiple shooters at the time too because gunshots were coming from multiple locations within the

[00:05:41] house so that's again that's part of the investigation we have to sort through

[00:05:46] and we will certainly come to a conclusion on that at some point right so was this guy running back

[00:05:53] and forth upstairs in the house because there were officers that were around the back of the house

[00:05:59] staging in the neighbor's yard and going through right so and they were drawing fire then that

[00:06:05] this neighbor that was interviewed on BTV he had video so I think it was him who had video

[00:06:11] there's video of cops drawing fire in the backyard right so uh but there was another there's a third

[00:06:17] property I think that also connects into that backyard so maybe it was that other house but

[00:06:22] either way what Jennings is police chief Jennings is saying is that there was fire coming from

[00:06:29] both the front of the house and the rear of the house out of the top floor that's why they

[00:06:34] thought there were two shooters which again this is a different story than we heard yesterday

[00:06:40] initially which was suspect killed on the front yard then drew fire from the house right

[00:06:48] they don't know if the two people that were in the house the two females that I guess surrendered

[00:06:58] we don't know if they were involved in these shootings one 17 years old and one is older

[00:07:03] we and Jennings did not know or would not say what the relationship was between the suspect

[00:07:09] terry clark hughes jr 39 years old uh who was killed we don't know what the relationship he may

[00:07:18] or may not have had with these individuals but if he was at the house the assumption is that

[00:07:23] obviously he knows them right Jennings also said in this press conference today that there was um

[00:07:31] um that it was an automatic ar 15 um and that means like first off this guy was a convicted felon

[00:07:43] he's he's already done like two and a half years and I believe it was four uh it was from like

[00:07:49] I don't know 10 15 years ago but he did like two and a half years in prison for being a felon

[00:07:56] in possession of a firearm if I recall correctly and so um I'm thinking that they got wind that he

[00:08:03] was doing something firearms related as a felon right that's why they went there

[00:08:11] if these are known felon and they've caught him you know selling something online or whatever

[00:08:17] um and I got this message from Russ which makes me wonder if there's something to this story and I

[00:08:26] have no idea but he says um cartels and gangs are providing the knowledge and 3d printing equipment

[00:08:37] to make glock switches and auto sears to convert semi-automatic weapons into fully automatic ones

[00:08:44] these pieces are smaller than a quarter and I've seen videos of kids or teenagers buying

[00:08:49] court-sized ziplocks full of them as well as groups of kids showing off their fully auto pistols

[00:08:58] gun control only controls the law abiding right which is um

[00:09:06] which is one of the arguments I saw yesterday uh on twitter as everybody you know races to

[00:09:12] climb atop the the dead bodies in order to make their political arguments about gun control right

[00:09:22] before you even know any of the details you have no idea any of the circumstances around this except

[00:09:29] multiple law enforcement officers are shot and I just went through how the stories have changed

[00:09:34] details that we thought were true were accurate were not actually accurate new details emerge

[00:09:40] and one of the perennial loser candidates for office a guy who can't buy himself a seat

[00:09:47] or win an election I'm not even going to give you his name but I've had him on the program in years

[00:09:52] past complete tool he uh you know he races out there to talk about how you know gun control now

[00:10:00] and you know all of this and it's like you realize they went to serve a warrant on a felon

[00:10:08] who was an illegal owner of a firearm which if you have your way with your various gun control laws

[00:10:16] would make many many many more people illegal possessors of or unlawful possessors of firearms

[00:10:24] too in which case now you are going to have this kind of a scene play out all over the country

[00:10:32] in many many many more instances right this is what it looks like when you try to take guns away

[00:10:39] from people right it doesn't always go smoothly not everybody turns them over willingly

[00:10:46] and a lot of the people who advocate this approach want to cite this example now as

[00:10:52] some sort of proof that they are correct when in fact it does the exact opposite

[00:10:57] Terry Clark Hughes Jr is the 39 year old suspect who opened fire in east charlotte killed four law

[00:11:03] enforcement law enforcement officers yesterday that were serving a warrant on him according to heavy.com

[00:11:12] which usually does like uh like five things you need to know about fill in the blank

[00:11:20] and so one of them that they've got here is the male suspect exited the residence on galway drive with a

[00:11:27] firearm law enforcement officers perceived an imminent deadly threat and fired their service

[00:11:31] weapons striking the suspect in the front yard of the residence so given that and i'm going to

[00:11:36] play this clip here too it almost sounds like they rolled up he started firing he murdered

[00:11:42] the four officers engaged in a firefight and then eventually came out the front door and got

[00:11:48] shot down that might be the way this played out if he was the only shooter

[00:11:59] this is david hodge is asking about clark's criminal history

[00:12:18] able to go in place of a felony charge that was also dismissed does any of that going to

[00:12:23] a larger problem in the criminal justice system okay that's a long time for chief jennings to

[00:12:32] respond and you could tell as i was watching it you could tell he's thinking about how to respond

[00:12:37] because the question is asked in front of all of these elected officials right

[00:12:43] trying to answer that oh zarnan history and even just so he's running through hodge's was running through

[00:12:48] the um he was running through the list of all the charges you know eluding arrest possession

[00:12:54] of marijuana under half an ounce which that okay but uh you know felony possession of a firearm

[00:12:59] and all of these charges and and many of them got dismissed well let me tell you let me say this

[00:13:08] uh i know this individual did serve a significant amount of time in jail

[00:13:15] and had been released but i can give you hundreds of examples of people that i feel like should not

[00:13:21] be out praying upon our citizens um and i've been pretty vocal about that particularly with juveniles

[00:13:29] what i'll say is that our system is not completely it's not completely

[00:13:37] the where it needs to be but we also have so many people involved i really think we're overwhelmed

[00:13:44] we're overwhelmed in the court system our district attorney is overwhelmed with the docket that we see

[00:13:50] within charlotte mecklenburg and um i don't have an answer for that but what i can tell you is that

[00:13:58] i am focused on holding people accountable for the crimes that they commit and making sure

[00:14:03] that accountability is appropriate and whether that means incarceration whether that means probation

[00:14:09] or whether that means uh something as simple as a fine but uh i firmly believe that we should be

[00:14:16] held accountable for crimes that we commit can you describe the relationship of those two females

[00:14:25] with the suspect i'm not i'm not no i'm not sure i want to release that right now but

[00:14:32] that'll be coming out at some point i know there was a relationship they were in the house voluntarily

[00:14:38] and one was an older female i say older but one was a juvenile 17 year old and the other one was

[00:14:46] a little older so we'll get the relationship at some point but not right now all right

[00:14:53] there's a relationship he's not willing to say what it is but there was some kind of a

[00:14:58] relationship don't know what it is okay if you're listening to this podcast you are obviously paying

[00:15:03] attention to the world around us you also have really great taste i might add but if you haven't

[00:15:40] seventy two thirty nine carolina readiness supply has two thousand square feet of supplies as well

[00:15:45] as educational materials that you're going to need for any kind of emergency veteran owned

[00:15:49] carolina readiness supply will you be ready when the lights go out uh all righty so uh i want

[00:15:56] read again uh the the bios of the victims of yesterday's

[00:16:06] murder of the four officers four agents that were serving a warrant on terry clark hughes jr

[00:16:13] he was what he was a wanted on a fugitive warrant they went to go pick him up he opened fire on

[00:16:18] the officers uh he killed three at the scene a fourth who was the cmpd officer who rushed

[00:16:25] to the scene to try to get the guys to try to rescue them um and he was shot he succumbed to his

[00:16:33] injuries last night so all right first is uh let me do the u.s deputy marshal or deputy us marshal

[00:16:45] thomas m weeks jr and uh his identity was not known until the safty or sorry this morning when

[00:16:54] the marshals service uh released his uh his name he was 48 years old of morsville and um

[00:17:05] he was a 13 year veteran of the u.s marshals service serving in the western district of

[00:17:10] north carolina for the last 10 years he was part of the team that was executing a warrant for

[00:17:15] the arrest of terry clark hughes jr 39 he was wanted for possession of a firearm by a felon

[00:17:21] in lincoln county the charlotte mecklenburg police department uh is leading the investigation

[00:17:27] weeks started his uh marshal service career in february of 2011 in the district of columbia's

[00:17:34] superior court washington dc he transferred in november of 2014 down to charlotte and prior to his

[00:17:42] tenure in the marshal service he spent eight years with customs and border protection

[00:17:49] and uh he leaves behind uh four children and his wife the cmpd officer who died of his injuries

[00:18:04] last night his name was joshua ire he had joined cmpd in october of 2017 and according to the

[00:18:16] release from the department uh before joining charlotte mecklenburg police he had served as a

[00:18:21] military police officer in the u.s army including at least one deployment to afghanistan that

[00:18:26] according to his facebook profile as reported by w s o c tv a week ago ire was featured on

[00:18:34] charlotte mecklenburg police fey their facebook page after he was awarded the officer of the month

[00:18:42] award for the north trion division and ire is survived by his wife and uh three-year-old son

[00:18:56] and then there are the two agents from the north carolina department of adult corrections um

[00:19:02] um sam pilachi or polosh poloshie polo c h e and alden elliot and uh they both had been with the

[00:19:13] department for 14 years they were task force officers assigned to this regional fugitive

[00:19:20] task force because it's a multi jurisdictional multi agency task force polosha joined the

[00:19:28] special operations and intelligence unit in 2013 elliot in 2016 they both had served several years

[00:19:36] prior to that as probation and parole officers um sam pilochie leaves behind a wife and two

[00:19:46] children and alden leaves behind uh his wife and one child um and when you hear the list of all

[00:19:57] of that and all of the the wreckage uh in the wake of this one guy and you know not only did he

[00:20:09] did he ruin the lives and end the lives of these four officers

[00:20:14] and blew up the lives of all of their family and friends and colleagues

[00:20:19] and a lot of people in the city they never met any of these people i i never met any of these

[00:20:22] four victims um but i still grieve for the for the families and and for their friends and their

[00:20:32] co-workers and this guy hues terry clark hues jr he uh you know he scarred those two women that

[00:20:45] are in the house even if they had nothing to do with it right if they were just there at the

[00:20:50] time it happened right how much damage did he do to them but also himself what a waste of a life

[00:20:59] you know just what an utter waste of a gift i mean as far as i could tell the guy was you know he

[00:21:13] had all of his fingers and toes ambulatory right he could he could walk around and all he

[00:21:19] obviously you know he he didn't suffer apparently from any kind of physical disability or anything

[00:21:26] i mean he had he had all he had this gift he had all of the potential that any human being could

[00:21:32] have and he just wasted it to end up like this and in the process murder four people

[00:21:43] injure four others and leave a wake of death and destruction and pain and devastation for all

[00:21:51] of these other people i mentioned the two females that were in the house uh we don't know um

[00:22:01] if they are suspects or not chief jennings was asked about that and he said you know if

[00:22:05] the investigation continues and they determined that they had participated in the attack on

[00:22:10] law enforcement then obviously there would be charges but at this time there are no charges

[00:22:14] against them apparently they they surrendered on their own accord hues was killed at the scene

[00:22:22] he was being sought for multiple felony counts including a weapons offense

[00:22:27] he was wanted for possession of a firearm by a felon as well as felony flee to elude

[00:22:32] both of these charges came out of lincoln county so i don't know why he ended up in east charlotte

[00:22:40] but if i had to guess i'd say he was he was running from the law right he had warrants

[00:22:45] out for him his corrections record in north carolina says he served two years and three

[00:22:52] months for possession of a firearm by a felon as well as speeding eluding arrest this goes back

[00:22:58] over a decade he had convictions for reckless driving another possession of a firearm by a felon

[00:23:05] a post release revocation post release revocation what does that mean we had gotten out right

[00:23:12] and then they revoked that went and brought them back in in and out and in and out and in and out

[00:23:22] or as a former colleague called it repeat repeat repeat repeat offenders

[00:23:28] i said this the other day you've probably heard it a bunch of times because john more turned it

[00:23:33] into a promo don't turn this into a promo again john this will continue until people say enough

[00:23:41] you heard jennings was asked about uh what does this mean you know at a larger level for the criminal

[00:23:48] justice system here in charlotte mecklenburg and i don't know how you come to any other

[00:23:55] conclusion look i'm not i'm not naive i don't believe that there's ever a utopian uh destination

[00:24:01] here we're going to get to where there's no crime and there's no violent people look i recognize

[00:24:05] there are wolves there are sheep and there are sheep dogs right there are wolves they will always

[00:24:12] exist they will always prey upon the vulnerable and so then you need the sheep dogs

[00:24:19] but when you know somebody to be a wolf you don't let them loose in the pasture you know

[00:24:26] i just want to give you some information read a couple of messages here to close this out um

[00:24:31] the hood hargott breakfast uh group hood hargott club um they are um

[00:24:42] they're doing a fundraising effort through the cmpd foundation i believe chief johnny

[00:24:49] jennings mentioned the cmpd foundation 100 of the money raised will go to cmpd and the other

[00:24:55] agencies that were directly impacted so if you want to donate money you can go to hood

[00:25:00] hargott breakfast club dot com and that's hargott h a r g e t t hood hargott breakfast

[00:25:08] club dot com all one word there is a go fund me that has been set up uh by charlotte city

[00:25:15] councilman tark bakari uh i retweeted that went out if you go to go fund me uh and look up his

[00:25:22] name or uh you know charlotte police officer something like that uh if you do a search for

[00:25:27] on the go fund me site you'll find it you can also find one that back the blue has set up as well

[00:25:34] believe there's somewhere around 70 000 dollars that they're raising for

[00:25:38] for the families and they do that pretty regularly in the wake of these types of

[00:25:45] tragedies um john in an email to pete at the pete calendar show dot com says

[00:25:53] um i've heard so many variations of this story initially thank you for breaking down all of the

[00:26:00] facets my prayers continue for the families of those killed and the wounded um and jennifer asked

[00:26:11] am i to understand there was not a second shooter originally they said something about a

[00:26:15] 17 year old male being taken from the house along with a female now they say two females but

[00:26:20] no second shooter i'm just trying to get the fact straight um right the initial report was that there

[00:26:26] was a one and this is the see this is how things happen when you're playing the game of telephone

[00:26:30] right the initial report was um and i am a link by the way in that game of telephone i recognize

[00:26:37] like my my role in this which was the initial report was that there was a female and a juvenile

[00:26:44] and that leads you to believe that there was a woman and if it was a female juvenile they would

[00:26:52] have said and a female juvenile because they said female but they did not say female juvenile so they

[00:26:57] said juvenile and that led people to believe that it was a male when in fact it was not two females

[00:27:05] in the house one 17 years old and one older than that we don't know their names or ages or

[00:27:10] the relationship that they had with the shooter that's according to the press conference that was

[00:27:14] held at 11 a.m today um and no charges by the way have been filed against them yet it is possible

[00:27:27] that they could face charges but that would come after the you know further investigation

[00:27:36] ron says uh reading some comments on facebook relating to this incident

[00:27:41] uh and seeing some that are praising the shooter while denigrating the police they are disgusting

[00:27:50] um i have seen this as well and it's not just um it's not just along it's not just along racial

[00:27:57] lines i've seen actually it's kind of a multi racial thing on both sides i've seen i've seen right

[00:28:02] wingers celebrating this second amendment advocates anti-government you know we hate the government and

[00:28:11] all things like far right wing guys celebrating the murders of these four law enforcement agents

[00:28:20] it's not and yes leftists as well celebrating too um stan says in a country where you have

[00:28:32] the right to bear arms how can you have illegal firearms so i don't know if he's talking about

[00:28:39] the individual firearm like automatic versus semi-automatic or something like that

[00:28:43] or if stan you're talking about an illegal possessor somebody who's a prohibited owner

[00:28:50] of a firearm a felon somebody who's convicted of a felony doesn't get that right back

[00:28:57] which is what happens by the way when you are convicted of crimes you lose certain privileges

[00:29:02] certain rights like for example the right to liberty they throw you in jail you know um

[00:29:09] it's been a created and then marketed and branded crisis i don't know what that means

[00:29:15] if someone is thought to be too dangerous to be amongst us in society with all their rights

[00:29:22] then they are already known to be so by authorities and should be in prison or a mental institution

[00:29:29] once you separate our rights into individual ones as opposed to an all or nothing proposition

[00:29:33] it's easier to remove them all over time without due process this would eliminate

[00:29:37] background checks for the law abiding see that's a okay so all convicted felons violent

[00:29:45] criminals and such you either lock them away for the rest of their lives
